Review: Spanky's Pizza Gallery and Saloon (River Street)

One of my favorite things about going home to visit is all of the wonderful southern food. There are so many chain restaurants here in Jacksonville that it really makes me appreciate the small, locally-owned joints in Savannah. Oh – and the delicious sweet tea everywhere. And though there are many delicious places in town to dine, there’s a 95% chance that I will go out of my way to enjoy a meal at Spanky’s – A Savannah original with a few locations around town.

So, after enjoying a night downtown with some friends, Jimmy and I headed to Spanky’s on River Street for an early lunch. We started with the Fried Veggie Platter as an appetizer.
A plate-full of fresh zucchini, mushrooms, cauliflower, broccoli and squash, fried in their delicious batter. You can get the platter steamed, but we obviously weren’t going for healthy after a night out.
O Everything on their menu is delicious, but I can’t eat there without ordering the chicken finger basket with spuds, which is what Jimmy and I both opted for as our lunch entrée. Five juicy, white meat chicken fingers battered and fried to perfection, served with thin-sliced spuds and your choice of dipping sauce (or in my case, sauces.) This basket is also yummy when ordered grilled with steamed veggies, but again .. healthy wasn’t our priority like it should have been.

If you are one of the many people who aren’t familiar with spuds, they are thin-sliced potatoes, fried in the same delicious batter as the chicken fingers and vegetables. They’re phenomenal!
photo 1-1bI am a major “dipper” and always need a million sauces with just about everything I eat, and Spanky’s is one place that doesn’t have any shortage of dipping sauces. Buffalo sauce, ranch, and honey mustard are all fine and dandy …

Note to self: Share a basket when ordering an appetizer. We had so much left over!

Other delicious menu items include the Fried Mushrooms, Hot Bread and Cheese, wings, and pizza. You really just can’t go wrong. And if you’re in the drinking mood (or need to recover after a night of bar hopping,) they have amazing Bloody Mary’s!

So what did we pay?
Diet Coke: $2.25
Sweet Tea: $2.25
Fried Veggie Platter: $8.95
Five Piece Finger Basket: $8.95 (x2)
Tax: $2.19
Total: $33.54

Let me know if you’ve been! If you haven’t, I hope you’ll add it to your “Savannah Eat List” when in town.
