The subject of this post is actually quite misleading … since I took my boyfriend and all. Though, he was one of five men in the theater. But let me back up …
Last Thursday night I had the opportunity to see Girls Night: The Musical on opening night here in Jacksonville at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts. I have recently become a part of the Artist Series’ Professional Women Theater Ambassador Program and Girls Night was the first of several shows I will get to attend as a part of the program. I was really hoping to have this post up before the weekend so that you all would have a chance to see the show after reading it, but I’ve been traveling for work and just haven’t had the chance. But don’t worry – The Artist Series has plenty more amazing shows coming your way!! Now back to this show.
Simply put, it was hilarious! The show is about five women spending the night on the town for an engagement celebration and enjoying time with just the gals. Or, as the show’s website says:
Girls Night: The Musical has been thrilling audiences and earning raves from critics throughout North America since it began touring after its sensational Off-Broadway debut. This touching and hilarious ‘tell-it-like-it-is’ musical takes audiences on a journey into the lives of a group of female friends. Audience members can’t help but laugh, cry and even sing and dance in the aisles to some the most popular hit songs of the 80s and 90s! Follow five friends as they re-live their past, celebrate their present, and look to the future on a wild and hilarious night out … and you’ll recognize a bit of yourselves in each one of them! It is described as “Desperate Housewives meets Mamma Mia” (Applause Magazine) and “As funny and outrageous as Sex & the City!” (The Advocate). Girls Night is packed with hits “Lady Marmalade,” “It’s Raining Men,” “Man I Feel Like A Woman,” “I Will Survive,” “We are Family” and many more!
From the very beginning of the show, I found myself casting the characters with my own friends. I really did see my friends in these ladies, as well as myself! (Sara S., Melissa T., Brittnee H. and Jordan M. – you HAVE to see this show if it comes near you. You’re in it!) I laughed the entire time … my jaws literally hurt when I left. And my goodness can those girls sing!!!
Warning: When they say “take your girlfriends,” you should probably take their advice. With the raunchy comedy and female-related references, it’s definitely called Girls Night for a reason! Although, I think the few men that braved it definitely had a great time, a lot of laughs, and probably appreciated seeing things from a woman’s perspective. I only heard Jimmy gag once, but heard him laugh out loud quite a few! In fact, the guy in front of me couldn’t stop laughing and about fell on the floor a few times. Rock on, dude!
And though the show was great, the best part of all was when they called all the men to come up on stage before the show began. You better believe I sent Jimmy’s behind up there! There were five or six men that went up, and Jimmy was the youngest by about 20 years. They were instructed to do a little dance and shake their booty, and Jimmy didn’t disappoint. Neither did the 60-year-old men! I totally wish I could have captured it on video :).
When the guys were on stage, the girl sitting next to me turned to me and asked, “How did you get him to come to this?” The truth is, I just asked if he’d like to be my date! He’s such a good sport. See, here’s proof that he was there:
So even though all of you Jax people missed this show when it came to town, I highly recommend catching it if you ever get a chance. And if you’re looking for another excuse for a girls night, I would suggest seeing “Spank! The Fifty Shades Parody” when it comes to town in April. I haven’t seen it yet, but I can already tell it’s going to be amazing!
