"Flashdance – The Musical" in Jacksonville

3.58.06 PM Can I begin by saying how
much I love Jacksonville? Not only does it offer everything you
could possibly want in one city (beach, river, beautiful bridges,
great eats, and fabulous shopping), it’s also home to the
Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts where dozens of
incredible Broadway and off-Broadway shows come each year, thanks
to The Artist Series. I have seen so many
amazing shows that they have brought to Jax, including
Wicked, Jersey Boys, Legally Blonde, Billy Elliot, Girls
Night the Musical, Spank! the Fifty Shades Parody, Mary Poppins,
Rock of Ages, Les Miserables,
and Fifty Shades
the Musical.
This past Tuesday, I added
Flashdance – The Musical to that list. It was
SO good! (Confession: I haven’t stopped listening to 80’s music
since.) It was one of my mom’s favorite movies growing up, which
meant it was one of mine as well. It always made me want to get up
and dance, which is exactly what the musical did for me too. And
since the movie is such a staple, the play had a lot to live up to
… and it did. The entire cast was phenomenal, especially the lead
actress who played Alex. The singing, the dancing, the acting …
man, I wish I could be talented in any
one of those areas, let alone all
three! But I sure did pretend like I could sing when they performed
“What a Feeling,” “Maniac,” and “I Love Rock & Roll.”
(My apologies to the folks who sat next to and in front of me.) And
it was all enhanced with these killer seats.

A little about the show: With
electrifying dance at its core, Flashdance – The Musical tells the
inspiring and unforgettable story of Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel
mill welder by day and a bar dancer by night with dreams of one day
becoming a professional performer. When romance with her steel mill
boss threatens to complicate her ambitions, Alex learns the meaning
of love and its power to fuel the pursuit of her dream.

Of course I knew the music and dancing was going to be great, but I
completely forgot how uplifting and inspirational the story line
actually was. Alex was determined to make her dream come true, and
she proved that nothing could get in the way of something if you
want it bad enough. Her performance put goosebumps on my arms,
tears in my eyes, and a smile on my face throughout the entire
show. You also know it’s a good show when the men even enjoy it. Of
course, I’m not sure how they couldn’t have … there were hott
girls dancing in lingerie, after all!
My date for the night. (Well,
for pretty much every night.)

They even did the
famous water scene!

This year,
Flashdance celebrates its 30th anniversary of the hit movie that
became a pop culture phenomenon, and what better way to celebrate
that than with a Broadway musical? Flashdance – the
is the stage adaptation of the 1983 hit film
that defined a generation, and makes its Broadway in
Jacksonville premier from Tuesday, December 10 to Sunday, December
15 at the Times-Union Center downtown. So go see it! And wear leg
warmers. And crimp your hair. I did …

Oh, and I dare you to walk by the concession
stand without splurging on some warm candied pecans.
The smell does it to me every time!

Again, the show runs through Sunday, December
15th and great seats are still available
beginning at only $32. I know it’s right before the holidays and
it’s hard to splurge, but do yourself a favor and make this an
early Christmas present. Whether it’s a family night out, date with
your significant other, or girls night, I promise, promise, promise
it will be worth every penny and you won’t regret it! Want more

awkward video review (if you’re brave enough to watch it):

for you, check out all of their other upcoming shows (including Eb
Scrooge, A Christmas Carol, Blue Man Group, War Horse and more.)

Let me know if you end up seeing
it! I’d love to hear your thoughts. Tata! blog signature
