War Horse Giveaway (Jacksonville)

War Horse Giveaway (Jacksonville)

Enter to win 2 tickets to Opening Night of War Horse, presented by the Artist Series! War Horse makes its Broadway in Jacksonville premiere next week from February 18-23 at the Times-Union Center downtown.

So remember when I gave away a pair of tickets to Blue Man Group a few weeks ago? And you were so sad when you found out you weren’t the winner? Well you can finally dry those tears – I have a pair of tickets to the Artist Series’ upcoming show War Horse, and believe me when I say it’s a show you DON’T want to miss!

If you don’t know what War Horse is all about, don’t worry, because neither did I. Like many of you probably have not, I didn’t see the 2011 movie, I never read the book, and I obviously haven’t seen the show before. But I have seen the poster for the show, and that alone made me want to see it. That and the fact that my Artist Series contact said to me months ago, “If you can’t make it to any other show this year, be sure you make it to War Horse. It’s going to be phenomenal.” Done and done!

So what’s it all about?
Winner of five 2011 Tony® Awards including Best Play, War Horse is the powerful story of young Albert’s beloved horse, Joey, who has been enlisted to fight for the English in World War I.  Joey is caught in enemy crossfire and ends up serving both sides of the war before landing in no man’s land.  Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home.  What follows is a remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship, filled with stirring music and songs and told with the some of the most innovative stagecraft of our time.

Sounds great, right? But how do you make this into a live performance? I mean, you can’t bring in a horse, teach him how to act, and put him in the spotlight in front of a live audience – let’s be honest. In the play, Joey is the star of War Horse, a life-sized puppet presented by the Handspring Puppet Company that brings breathing, galloping, and charging horses to thrilling life on stage. WOAH! I haven’t seen The Lion King show yet, but it sounds similar to what they do – and I hear that’s one of the best Broadway shows ever! If you want to learn more about Joey and what to expect, watch this “behind-the-scenes” video featuring Joey’s puppeteers:

Hi! I have never seen a Broadway show, and my girlfriend loves horses, she’s had a horse all of her life and has been part of the local 4H club since she was very young and has become a very well respected leader in the program, I would love for this to be my first Broadway show and I would love to surprise my lady with tickets to one about horses!

I really would love to go to this and my fiance thinks that she would love it as well. I have been to Phantom of the Opera as well as The Nutcracker on Broadway and enjoyed them both. I am very interested to see the puppeted horse in action as they tell the story… 🙂
