I am a firm believer that we were all put on this earth to do something amazing and make some sort of difference. For some, it’s gracing the world with acting or singing skills to entertain us, for some it’s to land a successful talk show gig allowing them to share happiness and give to those in need (I’m looking at you, Oprah and Ellen), and for the rest of us, it’s simply to be kind to others, to give back when we can, and do our part to make this world a better place. Whether we choose to do those things or not is up to each us.
For one family, their calling to make a difference was brought to light with a terrible tragedy. Alison and Paul Frase, the creators of these beautiful leather cuffs, faced the news on February 2, 1995 when their son Joshua was born, that he had an extremely rare, often fatal, neuromuscular disease called Myotubular Myopathy. At the time of his birth there were only 55 known cases worldwide, and there wasn’t any research being done to find a cure. In 2010, Joshua passed away on Christmas Eve. In an effort to raise funds to support research, Paul and Alison founded The Joshua Frase Foundation.
Today, they have raised over $6.1M, funded cutting-edge research, and their community is preparing to go into clinical trials. They changed the face of a rare disease because when the doctors told them there was no hope, they decided to fight for it. They turned their personal tragedy into a miracle for so many others.
I am so honored to partner with The Joshua Frase Foundation and share the #ChangeStartsWithONE collection
with you. It’s small causes like this we should all be made more aware of. Just because we haven’t personally heard of or been affected by it doesn’t mean it’s not important, and I am personally so thankful to have learned about this foundation and ways to support it. Being pregnant with my first child, I simply cannot imagine what this family went through, but I am blown away by their strength and courage to use their loss to help others and make such a difference.
I absolutely LOVE this handcrafted leather chunky leather cuff!
It pairs perfectly with a chunky sweater or a graphic tee. I’m wearing the brown and gold cuff, but it’s also available in black leather or silver metal, and they have a unisex cuff
as well. Speaking of graphic tees, if jewelry’s not your thing, they also have some really great graphic tees available. I absolutely LOVE this one
with the gold foil design. If you’re looking for a last-minute Christmas gift, consider something from the Change Starts With One Shop. Give the gift of style AND make a difference at the same time!
So on this Christmas Eve, while you’re celebrating with friends and family, I challenge you to take just a second to think about little Joshua, the Frase family, and others around the world fighting this disease (all diseases, for that matter), and remember how blessed you are. And if you want to start the new year off making a difference, order your own leather cuff and wear it with pride to remind you of the changes you’re helping make. I love wearing my cuff because each time I look at it I’m reminded to do something good, or at least just to smile at a stranger who passes by.
